Responsibilities
Democracy and Opinion is one of the University of Gothenburg’s dedicated Priority Research Areas. The Swedish National Election Studies Program, which focuses on elections, public opinion formation, and political behaviour, is a central part of this Priority Research Area.

The candidate must be willing to take responsibility for The Swedish National Election Studies Program, including the voter studies regularly carried out in connection with general elections. Furthermore, the successful candidate is also expected to play a leading role in the broad research on elections, public opinion, and democracy, which is carried out in the Department of Political Science. In addition, the duties of the Professor include supervising and teaching. The applicant is also expected to generate external research funding, to contribute to the internationalization of the “Priority Research Area” and to take active part in the debate on current political affairs.

Qualifications
The qualification requirements and the evaluation criteria for the appointment are as specified in Chapter Four of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance. Candidates are expected to have an internationally outstanding academic record including research, teaching and directing large research programs. Applications must be supported with formal documentation of these skills. Documented skills in teaching in English is a requirement for the appointment. While prior Swedish language skills is not a prerequisite for the appointment, the successful applicant is expected to be in sufficient control of the Swedish language to perform administrative and pedagogical tasks and external cooperation in the Swedish language after two years of employment.

Evaluation Criteria
Primary emphasis in the review process will be placed on the candidate’s quality of scholarship as evidenced by recent publications, success in attracting competitive research funding, and experience in developing and leading research groups. Also, the candidate’s pedagogical skills (teaching experience, track record in designing, developing, and coordinating courses, and doctoral dissertations supervised) will be considered. Consideration will also be given to the applicant’s proven administrative and leadership ability as well as her/his community relations skills. In addition, candidates should have good interpersonal skills and other personal qualifications required to successfully carry out the duties of the position, and be able to demonstrate broad academic competence beyond the candidate’s immediate area of specialisation.

Shortlisted candidates may be requested to make a presentation or give a guest lecture, attend interviews, and provide references.
